Ultraviolet leaf reflectance of common urban trees and the prediction of reflectance from leaf surface characteristics

چکیده
The spectral reflectance and transmittance over the wavelength range of 250–700 nm were evaluated for leaves of 20 deciduous tree species and leaf sheaths of five isogenic wax variants of Sorghum bicolor differing in visible reflectance due to cuticular waxes. Using the sorghum sheath reflectance and cuticle surface characteristics as a model, it was concluded that tree leaf reflectance above 0.06 was likely due to the presence of variously-shaped fine epicuticular wax structures on the leaf surface. Increasing the density of sub-micron wax structures corresponded to an enhanced ultraviolet (UV) reflectance over the PAR reflectance of a given leaf surface—either S. bicolor sheath or tree leaf. Amorphous globular epicuticular wax structures did not appear to scatter UV as well as wax filaments or vertical plates in varying patterns even when the dimensions of the structures were similar. Further work is needed to clarify this relationship and the influence of cellular pigments on subsurface contributions to the reflectance. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Wheat Leaf Rust Disease Severity Estimation Using Reflectance Spectrum Coding Methods
Using spectroradiometry and remote sensing techniques is an effective and rapid method in diagnosing vegetation diseases which enforced mostly by using spectral vegetation indices and statistical methods. The present study aimed to deploy encoding technique for the reflectance spectrum of the wheat leaves to assess the severity of the Rust disease. This is unlike to the spectral vegetation ind...
متن کاملVariability in leaf optical properties of Mesoamerican trees and the potential for species classification.
Leaf traits and physiological performance govern the amount of light reflected from leaves at visible and infrared wavebands. Information on leaf optical properties of tropical trees is scarce. Here, we examine leaf reflectance of Mesoamerican trees for three applications: (1) to compare the magnitude of within- and between-species variability in leaf reflectance, (2) to determine the potential...
متن کاملLeaf optical properties in higher plants: linking spectral characteristics to stress and chlorophyll concentration.
A number of studies have linked responses in leaf spectral reflectance, transmittance, or absorptance to physiological stress. A variety of stressors including dehydration, flooding, freezing, ozone, herbicides, competition, disease, insects, and deficiencies in ectomycorrhizal development and N fertilization have been imposed on species ranging from grasses to conifers and deciduous trees. In ...

متن کاملDetermination of Leaf Relative Water Content of Two Genotypes of Sesame Using Visible and Near- Infrared (VIS/NIR) Spectrometry to Detect Drought Stress
Relative water content (RWC) in plants is one of the most important biochemical parameters and its deficiency limits efficiency of photosynthesis and crop productivity. The scientific reports on using spectroscopy in detecting drought stress for sesame plants are very rare. In this study, the possibility of identifying water stress in two sensitive (Naz-Takshakhe) and resistant (Yekta) genotype...
